TASMANIA

There was a 48% increase in the number of sexual assault victims in Tasmania, from 121 in 2012 to a four year high of 179 in 2013. In Tasmania:

§ The majority of sexual assault victims (87% or 152 victims) were female;

§ Three in five victims of sexual assault (59% or 104 victims) were aged 19 years and under;

§ The most common location in which sexual assault occurred was in a residential location (65% or 116 victims); and

§ The offender was known to four in five victims (78% or 140 victims), with a quarter of victims (25% or 44 victims) identifying the offender as a family member.

There was a 15% decrease in the number of motor vehicle thefts in Tasmania, from 1,335 in 2012 to a four year low of 1,132 in 2013. Half of all stolen motor vehicles (52% or 589 victims) were stolen from a residential location, while 32% (359 victims) were stolen from a street/footpath location.
